This report is designed for users investigating natural building stones for restoration, construction projects or assessment of a quarry resource.
It contains a detailed petrographic description of sample or samples provided for assessment. Stone type is identified and where appropriate provides recommendations for the most suitable replacement stone type and currently available commercial sources.
Samples can be sent by post, or in some cases it may be appropriate for our staff to undertake a site visit (e.g. where several stone types are present in one building). It is important that the sample is representative of the stone which requires matching, and is large enough to allow proper characterisation (approx. matchbox size). We are able to take samples using diamond core drilling if required. Additional information regarding the age of the building, position of the sample etc. can be important, including whether replacement stone is principally required for visual matching or other conservation considerations. We recommend contacting our building stone specialists (through Enquiries) in advance to ensure the most appropriate course of action.
The standard price shown is for a report that describes a single stone type. Extra charges will apply for reports describing multiple samples of different stone types, additional thin sections or site visits. In addition BGS can provide specialised building stone analyses such as investigation of stone decay mechanisms — please contact Enquiries for further information
