The Appleby district extends from the north-east of the Lake District National Park across the Vale of Eden to the Pennine escarpment. Lower Palaeozoic igneous and sedimentary rocks in the Lake District and Cross Fell are overlain in the Vale of Eden by Carboniferous, Permian and Triassic sedimentary rocks. New work on the Borrowdale Volcanic Group in the Lake District has greatly expanded knowledge and understanding of the nature of the processes operating during this short but explosive geological episode.
