This 1000 piece jigsaw shows a 3D view of our crustal magnetic field model projected onto a globe with (exaggerated) topography. The crustal magnetic field model is just one part of our BGS Global Geomagnetic Model (BGGM), that is used in the directional drilling service we provide to industry. This part of the model describes the magnetisation of rocks at and under Earth’s surface, to a world-leading resolution of 28km. The model is derived from tens of millions of measurements from land, sea, air, and satellite surveys, processed using our High Performance Computing cluster in Keyworth. The red and blue colours show strong magnetic fields pointing in or out of the Earth’s surface – the most well-known features are the stripes seen running roughly North-South in the Atlantic, which are one of the key pieces of evidence that brought the theory of continental drift into the mainstream in the 1960s. Jigsaw finished size 50 x 66 cm (20 x 26”). Made from 100% recycled board.
