1 Ballantrae area - Classical Areas Guide

This volume and the complementary 1:25 000 geological map of the Ballantrae area arise from a programme of mineral reconnaissance and mapping carried out by the British Geological Survey on behalf of the Department of Trade and Industry. They represent the first comprehensive re-examination of the district since the 1899 revision by B. N. Peach and J. Horne of the original 1867 survey published at 1 inch to the mile.

2 Capel Curig and Betws-y-Coed - Classical Areas Guide

This publication describes the geology of the district covered by the 1:25 000 map SH 75, comprising the country around the villages of Capel Curig, Betws-y-Coed, Penmachno and Dolwyddelan.
Formerly in Caernarvonshire, the district now forms part of the county of Gwynedd and falls within the Snowdonia National Park. From elevations of less than 20 m above OD on the flood-plain of the Conway Valley in the east, the ground rises to 872 m at the summit of Moel Siâbod in the west. It is for the most part high moorland, much of it craggy, and is utilised mainly for sheep grazing and afforestation. Arable land is restricted to the valley floors flanking the rivers Llugwy, Lledr and Machno, all of which drain eastwards to join the River Conway.

3 Church Stretton area - Classical Areas Guide

The area shown on 1:25 000 geological sheet SO49 is centred on the small town of Church Stretton, in the borderland hill country of south Shropshire. The ground is divided from N.E. to S.W. by the Church Stretton valley which carries the railway line between Ludlow and Shrewsbury, and also the line of the main road along an old Roman route leading to the settlement of Uriconian near Shrewsbury.

4 Craven Arms area - Classical Areas Guide

The area shown on 1:25 000 Geological Sheet SO48 lies in the southern part of the county of Shropshire, in the pleasant hill-country of the Welsh Borders. The largest settlement is at Craven Arms, on the banks of the River Onny, which serves as an agricultural centre for the surrounding country and is noted for its annual sheep sales. It lies on the main N.–S. road (A.49) and railway line through the Welsh Borders, and is also well situated for access to much of Central Wales.

5 Cross Fell area - Classical Areas Guide (POD)

The 1:25 000 map of the Cross Fell Inlier covers the western scarp of the northern Pennines and the lower ground to the west. The scarp is formed of flat-lying Carboniferous rocks. At its foot a variety of Lower Palaeozoic rocks is exposed in the Cross Fell Inlier; between Murton and Knock, the harder rocks in this tract form isolated sharp-pointed hills or 'pikes'. Farther west, the lower ground of the Vale of Eden is underlain by Permo-Triassic sediments. …more…

8 Glencoe caldera volcano (Classical Areas Guide) plus 1:25000 Classical Areas (B) map [Booklet and Map Pack]

Studies in the Glencoe area led to the first detailed analysis of how a large long-lived volcano is successively plumbed by magma. This was almost 100 years ago, and the early interpretation of ‘cauldron subsidence’ still influences modern volcanologists who must infer sub-surface structures in modern volcanoes. …more…

10 Jersey. Description of 1:25 000 Channel Islands map Sheet 2

The Channel Islands are situated in the Gulf of St Malo and geologically have much in common with the adjacent French mainland of Normandy and Brittany. Their importance to British geologists lies principally in the magnificent coastal sections that expose rocks which have been virtually unaffected by either Caledonian or Hercynian metamorphism, and which, therefore, preserve a largely intact record of local Precambrian and Palaeozoic events. In addition, because the islands lay to the south of the Pleistocene ice-sheets, the superficial deposits present interesting comparisons and contrasts with those of both Britain and France. …more…

11 Moffatdale and Upper Ettrick valley - Classical Areas Guide

The elongate valley of Moffatdale with its steep sides, hanging valleys and spectacular waterfalls is a justifiably popular area for tourists and hillwalkers in the Scottish Borders. The main fault-controlled valley, with its prominent NE–SW Caledonoid trend so characteristic of the geological structure of northern Britain, has been deeply gouged by glacial action to form a dramatic topographic feature which is visible even from space. …more…
