This Sheet Explanation describes the geology of the Wells-next-the-Sea district. The small commercial port of Wells-next-the-Sea is on the north coast of Norfolk. Much of the coast is fringed by marshland, which forms an internationally important wetlands habitat for large numbers of overwintering migratory birds. Inland, the district rises to just under 100m, and includes some of the highest land in Norfolk. Much of the area to the south of the coastal marshes is underlain by Pleistocene tills and associated outwash sands and gravels. The Chalk Group forms the bedrock throughout the district. [Booklet]
