The historic market town of Saffron Walden takes its name from the saffron crocus which was grown nearby during the 16th century. The district remains predominantly agricultural. Chalk underlies most of the district and forms a rolling landscape, but harder beds within the Chalk are more resistant to erosion and form steep-sided scarp features.
