The Newcastle Emlyn area in south Wales lies mainly in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, but includes a small part of Ceredigion. The district is defined in the north by the Afon Teifi valley and in the south by the Afon Tywi valley. The area describes a transect across the shallow-water, shelf deposits of the Midland Platform into the deep-water deposits of the Lower Palaeozoic Welsh Basin. The main event represented is the Acadian Orogeny, caused by the collision of the palaeocontinents of Avalonia and Laurentia during the late Silurian and early Devonian.
The book describes the geological evolution of the Newcastle Emlyn district, and includes information pertinent to planning, mineral and water resources and ground conditions. The area has a heritage of slate and metal mining.
