The district lies to the west of London, mainly within the West Berkshire, Reading and Wokingham unitary authorities. The principal urban area is the Reading conurbation, which has seen rapid expansion over the last 30 years, together with the town of Wokingham straddling the eastern border of the district. The rest of the district is predominantly rural.
