This pack contains a Sheet Explanation for the district and the complementary 1:50 000 scale Bedrock Geology and Superficial Deposits map (folded). Sheet Explanations provide a brief description and interpretation of the geology of the relevant map sheet area.

The A5 Sheet Explanation booklet and the map are supplied in a transparent wallet. While it is possible to buy the map and Sheet Explanation separately, buying them together as map pack saves you £3.

The Sidmouth district is renowned for its coastal sections, which form a key part of the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site. The coastal sections expose a succession from the Triassic Otter Sandstone to the Upper Cretaceous Seaford Chalk, while inland, Triassic-Lower Jurassic strata form low ground beneath dissected escarpments of Cretaceous Upper Greensand and Chalk.

The area was not glaciated during the Pleistocene but the area was subject to periglacial conditions, with permafrost at all levels, and the formation of river terrace deposits and landslips. Landslips are still active on the coast and slope stability and coastal erosion have an impact on planning and land use. [Booklet and Map Pack]
