Some of the most remarkable rocks in Britain are displayed along this stretch of the Cornish coast. The district displays evidence for the rifting of the Avalonian continental crust in the earliest Devonian times, followed by continental collision during the Devonian-Carboniferous. The unusual nature of the rocks of this area was recognised early in the 19th century and in the 1930s, Eileen Hendriks suggested that the older rocks in the area were a result of thrusting.
