Engineering geology of British rocks and soils: Mudstones of the Mercia Mudstone Group. BGS Report RR/01/02 [Report]

This report is the second of an on-going series (the first being Engineering geology of British rocks and soils: Gault Clay WN/94/31); this series examines the distribution, engineering properties and regional variation of geological formations that are significant to civil engineering, construction and land-use in Britain. In this volume the mudstone of the Mercia Mudstone Group is described in terms of its outcrop, mineral composition, geotechnical properties and engineering behaviour. This report also provides a review of the past 30 years of published literature on the engineering behaviour of the Mercia Mudstone Group with regard to mineralogy, index properties, consolidation, strength, deformability, swelling, compaction, permeability; particular attention is given to the development of schemes to describe weathered material.
