The Lake District contains some of Britain's most outstanding scenery; it was recently nominated as a World Heritage Site. The spectacular landscape is the result of the area's geological history, evolution and erosion. The mountainous heart of the district is underpinned by Lower Palaeozoic rocks and it is those in the northern sector, comprising the Skiddaw Group, which are the subject of this memoir.
