This pack contains a Sheet Explanation for the district and the complementary 1:50 000 scale Bedrock Geology and Superficial Deposits map (folded). The Bedford district lies in the south-east of the English Midlands, around 45 miles north of London. The area forms a low undulating plateau capped by Pleistocene glacial deposits. The plateau is dissected by the valleys of the River Great Ouse and its tributaries. In the south-east of the district, the low-lying Marston Vale hosts the brickworks at Stewartby, which uses the Oxford Clay as its raw material. To the east of Bedford a large number of sand and gravel pits work the river terrace deposits. This Sheet Explanation describes the geology, applied geology, hydrogeology, mineral resources and engineering geology of the region. [Booklet and Map Pack]
