Natural (baseline) quality of groundwater in England and Wales

Natural (baseline) quality of groundwater in England and Wales

Research Report No. RR/07/06.

This report provides a summary of data for the chemistry of groundwater from 26 aquifers across England and Wales, studied in a BGS/Environment Agency project carried out between 1999 and 2005.

It is not uncommon for existing limits for drinking water quality to be breached by entirely natural processes.

This means that it is essential to understand the natural (baseline) quality of groundwater to enable effective management and restoration of groundwater resources.

The data and conclusions provided by this summary report, and the associated regional reports, are designed to be of use to regulatory authorities, water utilities, groundwater users and researchers, and all those involved in the protection and remediation of groundwater.
